Junior Umpire Development program for 2006

Hockey South is to introduce a new junior umpire (JUMP) development program in 2006. The program aims to encourage juniors to takeup umpiring by learning umpiring skills in various stages. The program is divided into four stages; the bronze level, the silver level, the gold level and the platinum level.
Bronze level - The starting level for beginning umpires. Obtained at the U12's match level. Umpires at this level are awarded the Hockey South junior umpires (orange) shirt.
Silver level - Intermediate level for developing umpires. Obtained at the U15's match level. Umpires at this level are awarded the Hockey South junior umpires (orange) shirt (if not already obtained), and are well on the way to obtaining a NOAS level 1 umpire qualification.
Gold level - Obtained at the U18's match level. Umpires reaching this level are awarded their NOAS level 1 umpire certificate, which is a nationalaly recognised qualification from Hockey Australia. Successful umpires at this level are eligible for selection on the A-pool umpiring panel which officiate at A-grade & A-reserve grade games.
Platinum level - Obtained at the U18's match level. Umpires at this level have their NOAS level 1 umpire certificate and are awarded their Hockey South senior umpiring (yellow) shirt. Successful umpires at this level may be selected to umpire A-grade and/or A-reserve grade matches, and are eligible for nomination to national championships.
Hockey South Director of Officiating, Lee Miles, said that juniors can begin the program at about 12 years of age, and can advance through the levels at their own pace. The program uses mentors from the Canterbury, University, North West Graduates, Old Hobartians Association, Derwent & Prince of Wales Wellington hockey clubs as well as nationally qualified umpire coaches from Hockey South.
